Five for Friday

Yippee, I am so glad it is Friday!!!  I am really excited that next week is Valentine’s Week.  I have a lot of fun and exciting activities planned for my kiddos that I think they are really going to enjoy.  I am going to try my best to remember to take pictures and post some of the things we do next week.   For now I am going to share my Five for Friday.

We recently had our American Poetry Contest at our school.  I had several kids from my class compete in the grade level competition.   One of my students won the grade level competition {the student in the red shirt}.  She will now go and compete with all the other second grade winners from the entire parish.   I am so proud of her.  She is an excellent student and an awesome speaker.   I will keep you posted on how she does.  The parish competition is not until the end of February.
My own little sweetie is entered in at her schools Social Studies Fair.  At her school they give the kids the option to compete in the fair or not.  Everyone has to complete a project, but it is up to the student to enter it in the competition.  We will find out today if she placed or not.  She was one of the few that was called in for questioning from the judges yesterday.  This has been a long process.  It was the first time that she or I has worked on something like this.  It was definitely a great learning experience for her.  It taught her a lot, especially on how to look up information on a topic.

The past few weeks my students have been working really hard in their Safety Town journals.  We have a field trip approaching very soon to Safety Town.  When we go we will learn all about ways to be safe in our community while riding in a car, bike, stranger danger, etcโ€ฆ  It is always one of my favorite field trips.  They even have a mock town set up and the kids get to ride bikes and go carts to help pretend they are in a town.  The kids absolutely love it.  However, before we go we have to teach lessons.  The lessons are all provide for us with journal prompts, worksheets, and everything we need.   Then we test the kids on what they have been taught and the scores are turned into the facility.  I am not sure what they use them for, but if I had to guess probably to turn in for some form of state funding to operate the facility.  I can’t wait to share pictures of our field trip with you.
We have been learning about soil and rocks.  We recently made a “Soil Scroll”.  It has the three main layers of soil.  This is one that a student made in the class.  I love all the detail she put into it.  They had fun with this activity and lesson.  We even had animals to glue on that lived in the different layers.  The kids couldn’t believe that turtles dig burrows.  They kept asking me if I was sure about this because the only place they had a seen a turtle was on the topsoil layer.  I assured them I was positive.   It cracks me up when they think they have one up on you.
Our story this week in reading was, “The Night the Moon Fell”.  I love the illustrations in this story.  They are so bright and colorful.  After reading the story the students and I discussed how the illustrator used color to bring his image to life.   Each student then picked their favorite image from the story and used oil pastels to draw their own version.
Well that about wraps up our week in Mrs. Knefely’s second grade class.  Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek!!!

Hi Jamie. That's exciting for your daughter with her Social Studies project and your student with her poetry. It has been an exciting week. What is Safety Town? Is it a one of a kind place? Sounds like a very practical, educational field trip.

This is how many students act in 2026. Teachers will identify with every single one of the students I portray here. Funny teacher video.

So what is this you might ask? It is my last minute version of a craft for Ground Hogโ€™s Day. I canโ€™t be the only one who decides the day of to do a craft and wing it, right? It looks more like a bear๐Ÿคฃbut it was suppose to be a groundhog with facts about Ground Hogโ€™s Day. No directions required just pull construction paper and glue. Youโ€™re welcome!๐Ÿ˜‰ ... One of my most favorite boards in my classroom is this ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป bulletin board right here! This is how it looks at the beginning of each year. As the year progresses I hang student art work and writings up. At the end of the year I take the work off and it is in order, neat and tidy, and students now have a portfolio of their best 2nd grade work. The bright folders I use to match my classroom theme are cut in half and the sign is just typed up in PowerPoint.

Here is a link to the bright file folders I used on this board (I use the extra folders to keep stuff stored in my filing cabinet): amzn.to/4mS2GhY
