According to Fountas and Pinnell, "A cold read of a text is the most accurate, efficient, and conservative way to assess a student's current reading ability. That is, you learn what the student can do without teaching." How I Use Cold Read Tests in the Classroom We use cold reads at my school in most grade … [Read more...]

Character traits are the valued parts of a person’s behavior. Questioning in reading and writing is when a student is able to ask questions to help them to understand and identify what they are … [Read more...]

Author's Purpose Activities

Teaching Author’s Purpose

How to Teach About the Author’s Purpose  An important part of reading is learning about the author’s purpose. When an author writes something, they are most likely going to have a purpose of some sort. Don’t worry, that purpose is not narrowed down in one reason. Sometimes the author’s purpose may be to persuade the reader. Other times it may be to inform the reader. Let’s talk about how … [Read more...]

Text Feature Activities

Nonfiction Text Features

Nonfiction Text Features Learning how to read and using the clues around you can be tricky for some students. Most nonfiction books have features which draw the reader in and gives clues to what the text is about. When it comes to non-fiction text, sometimes you just need to be able to navigate it more freely. If you’re trying to teach your students this skill, then you have come to the right … [Read more...]

Character Response and Setting Teaching Ideas

Character and Setting

How to Teach Kids About Character Responses and Settings  When you are reading or writing, it’s important to be able to draw conclusions about the characters and about the setting of the story. A student may be asked to read something and then answer questions or they need to be able to take a passage they read and write out an answer. Both skills are important! I wanted to share some tips … [Read more...]

Three Branches of Government Activities

Government and Election Day Activities

I have always loved teaching about the three branches of government. It is one of my favorite things to teach and with an election year right around the corner I thought I would share my favorite activities. With the 2020 election taking place in November there is not a better time to teach all things government. It is very common for students to mix up the three branches of government, … [Read more...]

So what is this you might ask? It is my last minute version of a craft for Ground Hog’s Day. I can’t be the only one who decides the day of to do a craft and wing it, right? It looks more like a bear🤣but it was suppose to be a groundhog with facts about Ground Hog’s Day. No directions required just pull construction paper and glue. You’re welcome!😉 ... See MoreSee Less

One of my most favorite boards in my classroom is this 👇🏻 bulletin board right here! This is how it looks at the beginning of each year. As the year progresses I hang student art work and writings up. At the end of the year I take the work off and it is in order, neat and tidy, and students now have a portfolio of their best 2nd grade work. The bright folders I use to match my classroom theme are cut in half and the sign is just typed up in PowerPoint.

Here is a link to the bright file folders I used on this board (I use the extra folders to keep stuff stored in my filing cabinet): amzn.to/4mS2GhY
