A Little Catch Up

We have been working like crazy in my class.   I have been such a slacker with blogging that I decided to catch you up on what has been going on in Room 202!

In math we are getting very close to finishing up addition and subtraction with and without regrouping.  Should I dare say that we have “mostly” mastered 2-digit numbers, now we are currently working on 3-digit numbers.   It is so funny how the kiddos can easily pick up on addition with regrouping, but when it comes to subtraction there are few of them that are all over the place.   We have played games and used manipulatives to help.  Do you ever use dominoes in math??  Even though we are getting ready to start our Geometry Unit very soon, I will not abandoned this skill.  I make a point to keep working on this for the rest of the year.

In reading we recently read the story, “The Night the Moon Fell”.  I love the drawings in this story.  They are so bright and colorful.  We even drew our on version of the moon using oil pastels.  The class loved doing this activity.  Here are a few of the pictures that some of my kids designed.
Recently we also read the story, “Soil”.  We made soil scrolls to correlate with the story.  The class demonstrated the layers of soil and what living matter can be found within each layer.  Then we wrote a paragraph about the layers.
Do you use Pearson Success Reading Street as your series?   Well if you do I have packs in my TpT shop that correlate with every story in the second grade series.   Be sure to check them out.

We had our Valentine’s Day party and it was fun with a complete sugar overload.  We made our sacks with the pack from the Teacher Wife.  The little monsters turned out so cute.  We also used her candy sort to take a break and have a little fun Valentine’s Day math.

My homeroom mom came up with the cutest, easiest craft ever.   It actually matched our monster bags (although we did not plan it that way).  I wanted to share it with you just in case you are looking for something to do next year.
I am also so sad to say that one of my teammates is moving.  Her husband is in the military and they recieved orders to move to a new base.   Oh, the life of a military family, the sacrafices they make.   She is use to it, because this is not their first move and probably will not be the last.   We are going to miss her so much.  It is so hard when you have such an awesome group of people to work with and then the dynmaic gets changed up.   We took her out for a good-by celebration.  Excuse my photo, my phone camera was not cooperating.
Ok, enough about teaching stuff – this is what has been going on on the home front.  The hubs and I recently returned from a weekend trip from New Orleans (one of my favorite places to visit).  And get this … we actually went by ourselves without the kiddos.   It is only like the third time since we have had kids to go on a trip without them.  I love my kiddos more than anything, but it was nice to have some alone time with my husband.  We said we are going to try and make more of a point to take breaks more often.
But now we are back and in the swing of things and my state is all things Mardi Gras right now.  This past weekend we spent time at a few of our local parades with friends.   My kiddos love this time of year!   Teachers who live in the southern part of my state actually get vacation days for this holiday.  Since I live in the northern part of Louisiana we don’t take a “no school day” for Mardi Gras, but we do still celebrate.  However, I have been to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and I must admit there is not anything anywhere else like it.   There is not anywhere else that can compare!
Well that about wraps it up for me!  Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek!

So what is this you might ask? It is my last minute version of a craft for Ground Hogโ€™s Day. I canโ€™t be the only one who decides the day of to do a craft and wing it, right? It looks more like a bear๐Ÿคฃbut it was suppose to be a groundhog with facts about Ground Hogโ€™s Day. No directions required just pull construction paper and glue. Youโ€™re welcome!๐Ÿ˜‰ ... One of my most favorite boards in my classroom is this ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป bulletin board right here! This is how it looks at the beginning of each year. As the year progresses I hang student art work and writings up. At the end of the year I take the work off and it is in order, neat and tidy, and students now have a portfolio of their best 2nd grade work. The bright folders I use to match my classroom theme are cut in half and the sign is just typed up in PowerPoint.

Here is a link to the bright file folders I used on this board (I use the extra folders to keep stuff stored in my filing cabinet): amzn.to/4mS2GhY
